Video Production Details

Chrysalis is an experimental, creative short written and directed by female film director Grace Julia, in which audiences witness a woman's metamorphosis in under 2 minutes. With a strong female-led team, Grace paired up with award-winning Sydney cinematographer Joanna Cameron.

Chrysalis explores the inner world of a woman following a breakup (Ebony Nave) as she experiences grief before a beautiful rebirth. The film begins with recollections of her ex-lover (Tom Wilson, Heartbreak High) shot on expired film at Cronulla beach. Then, in an Inner West studio, surreal scenes incorporating experimental techniques like projection capture the character’s progression from heartbroken to in-her-villain-era. The climax sees the lead revisit the Sutherland Shire beach, where she unleashes her fury—with fire expertly crafted by Caleb De Leon CSI of 3p Studio, a post-production house in Brisbane. Continuing the theme of a Queensland/New South Wales collaboration, Grace Julia styled the film, sourcing gowns from Brisbane designer Joteo, complimented by bespoke pieces from Sydney jeweller, Fairina Cheng. With a passion for directing fashion content and brand campaigns, Grace used this film as an opportunity to hone and showcase her skills as an emerging Australian commercial director.
